Congratulations to National Bakery and Deli on being named the 2025 Bakery of the Year!
The award was presented on Sunday, April 27, 2025, during the WBA’s annual Member Awards and Appreciation Night held at the Embassy Suites in Brookfield, WI.
National Bakery & Deli was selected from a group of five nominated Wisconsin bakeries, with past award recipients casting votes to determine the winner. The recipient remained a closely held secret until the announcement at the ceremony. Owners Jeff Callen and Bryant Krauss, both long-time members of the WBA, were in attendance to accept the award in front of their peers.
Amy Hermann from Valley Cooperative Association was proud to present the Bakery of the Year Award to National Bakery & Deli. “Not only are they a standout in quality and tradition, they're also celebrating an incredible 100 years in business this year! Cheers to a century of excellence and to many more to come!” said Hermann.
About the Bakery of the Year Award
Established in 2001, the WBA Bakery of the Year Award celebrates excellence in business operations, contributions to the baking industry, and community impact. This year’s award was sponsored by the Valley Cooperative Association. The recipient received a permanent trophy to proudly display in their bakery.
A Legacy of Quality and Community
Founded in 1925, National Bakery & Deli has become a beloved institution in Wisconsin’s baking scene. With locations in Milwaukee, Brookfield, and Greendale, the bakery is celebrated for its festive cookies, handmade breads, kringles, and custom cakes. Owned by Bryant Krauss and Jeff Callen, the business employs 40 staff members, all located in Wisconsin, and involves multiple generations of family.
Over the last five years, the bakery has modernized its operations, expanded seasonal offerings, and maintained a strong local presence. It is frequently recognized for its creative cookie designs tied to current events—like the popular “Trump & Kamala” cookies and eclipse-themed treats. These playful additions have made the bakery a cultural touchpoint, as well as a provider of beloved baked goods.
Commitment to WBA and the Community
As active WBA members, National Bakery & Deli has participated in numerous industry events, supported educational efforts, and mentored emerging bakers. “We belong to the WBA because we believe in building up the baking industry—not just our own business,” said owners Krauss and Callen. “Through collaboration, shared knowledge, and mutual support, we all thrive.”
In addition to their WBA involvement, the bakery remains a visible and engaged part of its community donating to local causes, participating in events, and being recognized with official proclamations from Milwaukee, Brookfield, and Greendale.
Looking Ahead
National Bakery & Deli continues to support and mentor young bakers, provide jobs across multiple locations, promote baking as a craft, and uplift the local economy. With a century of service behind them, the bakery looks forward to continuing its legacy of excellence in the decades to come.
