Grebe’s Bakery named Bakery Operation of the Month for November 2009

West Allis, WI—Congratulations to Grebe’s Bakery in Milwaukee.  The bakery was named the Bakery Operation of the Month for November 2009 from the Wisconsin Bakers Association (WBA).  The business earned the honor for hosting the WBA’s Bakers Forum in November, which is a networking and educational event for WBA members and other baking industry representatives.

What started as a way to help make ends meet for a southside Milwaukee family in the mid 1930s turned into a flourishing operation that continues more than 70 years later.  Founder Irene Grebe would be proud that Grebe’s Bakery now has third and fourth generation family members keeping the business going, and is led by President Jim Grebe, Jr.

Currently Grebe’s employs approximately 175 employees, as well as two part-time office employees.  The business, located at 5132 W. Lincoln Ave. in Milwaukee, includes a retail outlet and a 40,000 square foot plant.  More than 200 items are produced every day.

Nominations for Bakery Operation of the Month are submitted to the WBA office for consideration.  Selected operations must include the following criteria to be considered:  must be a WBA member in good standing; must have made non-monetary contributions to the bakery industry and Wisconsin Bakers Association; have something that qualifies the bakery as an outstanding business; and winner would agree to have the award publicized in the media.

In addition, winners of the Bakery Operation of the Month are considered for the Bakery Operation of the Year (BOY) award.  The first BOY award was given in 2001 to recognize an outstanding WBA member bakery operation for its contributions to the WBA and the baking industry.  The current Bakery Operation of the Year is O&H Danish Bakery in Racine, Wis.
