The WBA fosters education & scholarships

The Wisconsin Bakers Association (WBA) fosters the education of future bakers as well as practicing bakers through scholarship programs and workshops.  To encourage baking careers, the WBA supports school-to-work programs and job shadowing to provide students with realistic insights into the world of baking..

The WBA, The Retail Bakers of America, MATC- Milwaukee, and MATC-Madison, have implemented diploma courses in commercial baking.  In addition, the WBA endorses a certificate program in commercial baking at the Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, Wis.  Dave Schmidt, WBA Executive Director, currently sits on advisory committees for the baking programs at MATC-Milwaukee, MATC-Madison, Fox Valley Technical College (Appleton, Wis.) and Moraine Park Technical College (Fond du Lac, Wis.).  The Association added a student membership category to bring these future bakers into the fold.

Alleviating the current shortage of qualified bakers benefits the entire baking industry.  The WBA has awarded more than $25,000 in scholarships since the mid 1980s!

WBA scholarship information
The Wisconsin Bakers Association's education committee submitted recommendations to the Board of Governors on Oct. 24, 1983, to implement the WBA Scholarship Program.  The first scholarship awards were later presented in 1984.  Since then, the WBA has awarded more than $25,000 in WBA Scholarships!

Under the WBA scholarship program, the maximum award that can be given to any one student per calendar year is $1,000.  If you are a student who wants to take commercial baking courses you may be eligible for a WBA scholarship.  Already a baker?  Continue your education—a WBA Scholarship can help pave the way!

Please note: Wisconsin residents only can apply for the WBA Scholarship. A national scholarship, the Robert W. Hiller Scholarship, also is available and open to applicants pursuing a degree in the baking/pastry arts.  Information about that award is below.

The WBA also has a national scholarship, the Robert W. Hiller Scholarship, in addition to the local scholarship that is offered annually. Please note you must have Adobe Acrobat in order to view the scholarship application.  You can download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat by clicking here.

The WBA established the national scholarship fund to support and encourage people who have demonstrated a passion for a profession in the baking/pastry arts field.  A $1,000 scholarship is awarded per academic year to the applicant who can best demonstrate this career commitment.  The WBA awarded the first Robert W. Hiller Scholarship during its 100-year anniversary celebration, Sept.18, 2005, at the Country Springs Hotel in Waukesha, Wis.

The Robert W. Hiller Scholarship Fund was established on Nov. 5, 2000, by the members of the WBA in honor of Robert (Bob) and the late Sandy Hiller's lifelong commitment to the Retail Baking Industry.  The program intends to provide a financial resource for the education of students who will be the future of the Baking Industry.  The scholarship application deadline is early June and the winner is determined by mid-summer.

For further information about the scholarship, contact the WBA at (800) 542-2688 or email by visiting the contact us page.
